"Old Indian Legends Retold" is written by the Native American writer, editor, musician, teacher and political activist, Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, better known as Zitkala-Sa.

Bonnin co-composed the first American Indian opera, The Sun Dance, along with William F. Hanson in 1913.
